Ode on the Ancients at Red Cliff
- To the Tune of Niannujiao
Waves rising and falling, the Mighty River to the east flows,
For a thousand years gallant people come and go.
To the west of the old fortresses is the Red Cliff
Telling the story of the Three Kingdoms about the young Zhou Yu.
Rugged rocks spearing the sky,
Billows are dashing against the bank
As if whirling up myriads of heaps of snow.
So splendid and beautiful are the mountains and rivers,
Once upon a time they saw so many heroes.
The young Marshal Zhou Yu, who just married the fair Xiao Qiao,
Brave and bright, with plumed fan in hand and silk hood,
While jesting and laughing
Set the enemy fleet of ships on fire and they went up in smoke.
Recalling and admiring the ancients,
I would be bantered for being sentimental and becoming gray before my time.
Alas, life is but a dream,
Let's drink to the floating moon in the Mighty River.
