TO MY SON
东山 译
The way of a gentleman is to cultivate self by inner peace,
And by frugality to foster virtues.
Without parting with fame and wealth there is no way to clarify your will;
Without tranquility you cannot go far for achievements.
To Study well requires quietude and talent needs learning;
Without learning there is no way to expand your talents;
Without will you cannot accomplish studies.
You cannot be thorough to be the best if you are lazy and heedless;
You cannot nurture a good character if you are impulsive and reckless.
Years gone by with hours,
Aspirations fade away with the years,
Eventually you would age and fall for a life worthless and futile.
In the shabby home you may bemoan the ill fate,
But repentance would be in vain and too late.
